10 reasons why you should be surfing

1. Surfing frees your mind

Out in the ocean it's only you and one of the most amazing elements: water. Once you have paddled out and you're sitting there waiting for your wave you will start relaxing. When your first wave comes and you get on you feel a combination of total excitement and adrenaline and freedom. You're smiling and are enjoying every moment of it. Your mind has just been cleared of whatever problems you had before.

2. Surfing makes you fitter

Surfing gives you a complete workout right there and then, though you might not feel it because of the adrenaline flow. Paddling out and carving the waves trains your upper body as well as your hips and mobility. It'll also get you to train more at home to be fit enough for your next trip. And what is a better motivation than knowing you'll be out in the waves again soon?

3. Surfing gives you confidence

Surfing is an extreme sport - you'll need a bit of courage to overcome fear and maybe physical pain. Paddling out through a set will test your stamina, and there's no resting once you're on the wave. But the sense of achievement reinvigorates you, creating more confidence which helps in all walks of life.

4. Surfing brings you nearer to nature

Spend your time with nature in the great outdoors - not on a playing field or in a sports hall. You'll learn to respect the sea while reading the wind and the waves. Depending where you're surfing you'll meet beautiful sea creatures likes dolphins or seals.

5. Surfing helps you meet great people

Just about all the surfers we know are really chilled (well, there's always the odd exception but that's life). So as soon as you get to the beach you'll find friendly surfers who are happy to exchange experiences, talk about great spots to surf, or just make you feel welcome. Waiting on the water for a wave is another chance for a chat.

6. Surfing helps you find peace

Yes, it's the opposite of meeting people - but sometimes being alone on the water is a great opportunity to relax. You can soak up the peace around you and take your dream wave without worrying about anyone else.

7. Travel the world for surf

And this doesn't mean the normal places everybody gets to see sometime in their life. It's finding places with awesome beaches and wildlife, well off the beaten track. It's the adventure of finding your own special place, or tracking down a friend's recommendation.

8. Surfing teaches you about different cultures

Travelling the world and visiting surf spots will bring you close to each country's culture. If you travel on your own you'll certainly meet local surfers - be friendly and listen to their advice, and they'll accept you. Local guides will probably be there if you book a surf camp. Surfing and socialising with the local people is a sure way to find out about the country - better than any hotel!

9. SMILE you're surfing

Once you get out there and surf your first wave - OMG!! an indescribable feeling grabs you. I want to do that again! You're in a world you didn't know even existed, and now you don't want to come back...
